Lesson 2
1. I went in to set up an account and already had one. I had been in before but was not sure that I had an account set up. I did remember the password and things so I got started by taking a quiz.
2. I did a complete test just because I wanted to go all the way through. It was a 4th grade reading comprehension test and it was fun. I did miss one question but it was easy to get around in. When it was scored it went back through the answers and gave the reason for any wrong answers. Students always like the results immeadiatly.
3. I like that from the top tab I can always get to My Center and find what I put there. There is just so much informatio that it boggles my mind. In the middle of my searching around in there I had a lady come in and she wanted to know where her son could go for some college prep tests so I showed her around in there. I however, went to Career Courses: determining what you want from your career and read some of things to help you decide what direction you would like to go. This could be very helpful for a student that really does not know what they want to do. Adults sometimes are in this same situation where they need help in moving on, maybe even to go back to school. What is nice here is that if they think they want to go back to school they can practice some of the tests and see if they can handle the material or want to study hard enough to pass these kinds of exams.
4. I had put in Cosmotology and had found the listings. Then I went to the bottom of the page and clicked on e-books. I found this most interesting. I choose a Getting Ready for 4th Grade Assessment Tests and found it was 194 pages long. It had a great introduciton and index and then I found the list of states most interesting. They mentioned when the testing would be done in each state giving parents a heads up on when their student needs to be prepared to take these tests. There was a great guide in showing parents how to use this book in helping to prepare students for these kinds of exams. I am thinking that this is something I can pass on to the PTO which is a new group in our school always looking for ways to help children. I will talk to the principal to see if we could show this to them. I also went into a book called the U.S. Constitution in 15 min. a day. I am going to pass this one along to the history and govt. teacher. They all have white boards in the classroom and it would be a fun thing to use with kids. I went into a Cosmetology Certification Exam, 4th ed. but I could not get that one to open up. The other two were much more useful for me. We just spent a morning with the 7th graders that are doing study skills this semester and went over some of the tests on this site. I always mention it to the 10th graders when I go through data bases when they start Speech class. This is a site I often recommend but have never spent a lot of time in it. Thanks for making me go there.

Lesson 1 c.
1. The visual dictionary has good pictures and you can get around without being able to read the words in another language. You can click on a picture and then listen to it being read to you so for a younger child that cannot read they can just click on the pictures and then listen in their language and learn about the an animal.
2.. This could be useful to the Spanish class as they could listen to it being read and then follow along and learn to sight the words. I am going to see if the Spanish teacher has ever used this method. If I were trying to learn Spanish I would repeat one of the windows several times and try to learn the words this way. If a student knew the basic words it could really help to expand their vocabulary. There is a lot of potential here. However, by changing the language in the English verson that is another option for more languages.

Lesson 1b
World Book Public Library
1.
A kangaroo is a type of furry animal that hops on its hind legs. Kangaroos live mainly in central, southern, and eastern Australia.
Kangaroos are mammals. They feed their young with mother's milk. They are a kind of mammal called a marsupial <<mahr SOO pee uhl>>. Marsupials give birth to very small babies. Most baby marsupials live in a pocket, or pouch, on the mother's belly until they grow larger.
The two main kinds of kangaroos are red kangaroos and gray kangaroos. A full-grown male kangaroo stands about as tall as a man. Female kangaroos are smaller.
Kangaroos have a small head, a pointed nose, and large ears. They have a long tail and large, powerful hind legs. Kangaroos can hop as fast as 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour. They use their long tails for balance when they hop.

2.
In the Info finder there was more information. I found 57 encyclopedia articles relating to this word, and in the Kids there were only 14 items found. The videos were the same in each book from what I could tell. There were 3 selections in each and I clicked on one and it was the same. The Info Finder had more spicific search places on the home page including Newspaper, Current Events, Biography, Science center and Research tools. This section is definatly going to be more useful to an older student. The exploring on that page is endless.
3. I like the full Text selection so that people do not have to spend time hunting if they need more than just a bit of information. I like opening that page and having the current events right there. It allows a person to catch up with the news while they are doing some research. I also like the SD Government tab if I need to find out any SD information.
Immeadiatly on the right side it listed the Primary Source which I found helpful. If I needed to do a longer report this might not be enough information and I would go back and choose another article. This article only had one primary source. It did have good maps which was one of the left hand tabs. I think the Primary source tab is one of the most useful because it allows you to know immeadiatly how much information you might have avaliable.

This is my first try at a blog so I am hoping to learn a lot of things.
Lesson 1a.
1.
Elephants are the largest land animals in the world. They are the only animals
with a long trunk for a nose. An elephant also uses its trunk like a hand to put food
into its mouth. A mother elephant uses her trunk to stroke her baby. And an elephant
takes a shower by sucking water into its trunk and then spraying it over its body.
Wild elephants spend most of the day eating. They eat about 300 pounds (140
kilograms) of plants a day. They bathe in lakes and rivers and love to roll around in
muddy water. After a mud bath, an elephant may cover itself with dirt. The dirt helps
protect the animal's skin from the sun and insects.
2. This article is much longer. The first article has 4 videos adn 1 picture. The second article has 4 videos(most are the same video), 9 pictures, 1 sound and 1 table. In the first article the sentence structure is short and simple and in the second article the sentences are much longer and complex. Both articles showed citations. In the first search I found 44 articles and in the second search I found 167 articles.
3. I found the slide presentation in the center fun to watch. The presentations on both the left and right gave a student lots of options when searching. I put in Togo because we had some students here join the peace corps and that is where they went. I felt for this small country the Maps and Encyclopedia articles were the most helpful. Back in Time also provided a lot of good information on how this country was established.
4. In this section the pictures could help somone that did not speak English. Then on the left side it let a student change languages which would also be very helpful. One thing I did not find is the number of articles available on that topic. I like to see that when I get into a subject and so many of the data bases have this feature. Maybe I just missed it somewhere.
This unit was very good tonight because I am just getting into using the World Book database with my 6th grade classes.
